The Spiti Valley, often referred to as “The Middle Land,” (The land between Tibet & India) is a hidden gem in the Himalayas, rich in culture, breathtaking landscapes, and unparalleled
stargazing opportunities.
“The mountains are calling and I must go.” — John Muir.
Here’s a glimpse of my 8-day adventure I took with Arc Educators exploring not just the day but the beautiful nights of Spiti Valley.
This trip I had planned for my birthday as a gift to explore the North and to deepen my love and understanding for astronomy.

Day 1: Delhi to Shimla
Our adventure began in the bustling city of Delhi, where during the day we explored Delhi, all that while mentally preparing ourselves for the overnight journey to Shimla. We embarked on a scenic road trip to Shimla filled with picturesque views of the mountains, lush greenery & of course we slept like a baby on the way to acquaint our bodies to the amazing Ghats & the altitude we were slowing approaching.
The magical word that you need to know is ‘Julley’, pronounced as Joo-lay (means Namaste or hello). Wherever you go, it’s always good to know a few basic words in the regional language. So, there you go!

Day 2: Shimla to Chitkul
After our tummies were full at Shimla, we set off to Chitkul, which was another 8 hour journey to the last inhabited village on the Indo-Tibetan border (Literally we could the Tibetan mountains as well). The drive through the beautiful landscape was mesmerizing. In Chitkul, we enjoyed the stunning views of the Baspa River and the majestic mountains surrounding us. The night brought an incredible stargazing experience, as we camped under a blanket of stars.
Day 3: Chitkul to Tabo
Leaving Chitkul, we ventured towards Tabo, home to one of the oldest monasteries in the Himalayas. The Tabo Monastery, with its intricate murals and serene atmosphere, was a highlight. As it was 77th Indian Independence Day, we were able to be a part of the flag hoisting at the Tabo Monastery.

We continued the monastery adventure & visited the Dhankar Monastery. Perched on a cliff offering panoramic views of the Spiti Valley. The tranquility of the monastery was palpable, making it a perfect spot for reflection & we also got the opportunity to meditate inside the beautiful & peaceful caves of the monastery. At night, we witnessed a star lit sky & kicked off our astronomy observations.

Day 4: Tabo to Kaza
From Tabo, We continued our journey to Kaza, the largest town in Spiti, where we explored local markets and indulged in delicious Tibetan cuisine. Another night of beautiful Stargazing, Saturn rings & mesmerizing skies.
Day 5: Kaza to Langza
The next day was dedicated to exploring the villages around Kaza. The day was filled with excitement as we traversed the Chicham Bridge, the highest bridge in Asia, offering thrilling views of the gorge below. The Kee Monastery, a 1,000-year-old structure, was a marvel, and the breathtaking views from the top were well worth the climb. At Night, we visited Langza, famous for its fossil-rich landscapes and rated a Bortle Sky Level 1 location, indicating pristine dark skies ideal for stargazing. The clarity of the night sky allowed us to see deep sky objects like the Andromeda Galaxy, Pleiades star cluster, and the long awaited Milky way arm.

Astrophotography Experience
As night fell, I set up my mobile camera for some astrophotography. The Milky Way stretched across the sky like a blissful river, and I captured stunning shots of star trails and deep sky objects. The lack of light pollution in Spiti allowed for long exposure photographs that revealed the universe’s beauty in vivid detail. Each click of the shutter felt like a connection with the universe, reminding me of our small place in the vast universe.

Day 6: Kibber, Komic & Hikkim
We decided to continue our journey bike-riding, first we visited Langza again to witness its beauty during the day & then enjoyed the scenic route to Kibber, which once held the record of the highest village in the world. Then, we visited Komic, which is the current highest village in the world, also the Pan cakes at Komic are to die for! Then we throttled our way to Hikkim, which has the world’s highest post office, from where we sent postcards home.

Day 7: Kaza to Kalpa
Unfortunately, we had to change gears from our supposed to be destination of Chandra Taal to Kalpa, as Manali to Shimla route was shut, which was our exit way for the full circuit. But as said, “A change of scenery can help everything” we were blessed with the soothing views of the beautiful village of Kalpa. Surrounded by apple orchards and views of Kinnaur Kailash, Kalpa was a serene escape. Here, we took time to relax and reflect on our journey while enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Ended with another beautiful Stargazing session.

Cultural Experiences
Throughout our journey, we immersed ourselves in the rich culture of Spiti. We interacted with the warm-hearted locals & monks, who shared stories about their traditions, festivals, and the significance of monasteries in their lives. We savored local dishes like Thukpa and Momos, which added a delightful culinary aspect to our adventure.

Day 8: Kalpa to Shimla
As we retraced our steps to Shimla, we reminisced about the unforgettable experiences in Spiti. The memories of the mountains, monasteries, and night skies filled with stars were etched in our minds.
The Experience remains in our hearts forever & I wish to revisit it from Day 0 on loop.

This journey through Spiti Valley was not just about the breathtaking landscapes and ancient monasteries; it was a deep connection with nature and the universe. The starlit skies and the tranquility of the mountains left an indelible mark on my soul. If you’re seeking adventure, spirituality, and a chance to connect with the cosmos, Astrocamp Spiti Valley should be at the top of your travel list.
